Biography

Jarron Saint Onge leads BD-WH project "Rural Health Lifestyles: The role of Demographic Change and Migration Shifts on Rural Women's Health", investigating increasing mortality rates among rural women. This project uses demographic and health data to analyze mortality factors over time and across counties ranging in degrees of rurality, aiming to identify effective interventions to improve rural women's health outcomes and longevity.

Saint Onge's research applies advanced quantitative techniques to social epidemiologic phenomena. His research falls in the area of medical sociology and social demography. His principal research focuses on the social determinants of population health and health disparities by race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status. He has a continued interest in the role of health lifestyles, health behaviors, neighborhood context, and social stressors in explaining mental and physical health and mortality outcomes.

Jarron M. Saint Onge has a joint-appointment with the Department of Population Health at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

Research

Professor Saint Onge is a sociologist and social demographer by training. He has expertise in nationally representative survey data, U.S. Census data, and quantitative data analysis. His research has been focused on understanding how social determinants of health continue to influence health disparities, by sociodemographic characteristics such as race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or rurality. Specifically, his research has been focused on the relative importance of social and residential context (i.e., neighborhoods factors) on health behaviors, as well as well as implications for distinct health lifestyles and subsequent health and mortality outcomes. He is dedicated to improving the health of marginalized communities.
